Alexakis at the Festival Vo-Vf

The festival Vo-Vf La Parole aux Traducteurs will take place from 10 to 12 october 2014 in Gif-Sur-Yvette, France. On Sunday afternoon Vassilis Alexakis will talk about his self-translations:

14h - 15h15 Carte blanche à la Bulac
Conférence animée par Clotilde Monteiro sur l'autodraduction, avec l'écrivain Vassilis Alexakis dont l'œuvre, dans ses versions grecque et française, est présente dans les collections de la BULAC. Grand habitué des aller-retours entre le grec et le français, cetaficionado s'est mis un jour en tête d'apprendre une troisième langue, le sango. Vassilis Alexakis qui se définit comme Grec par ses parents et Français par ses enfants a aussi coutume de dire « j'ai une langue pour rire qui est le français, une langue pour pleurer qui est le grec et une troisième le sango, l'idiome de la république centrafricaine, pour jouer ». Comme d'autres noms prestigieux avant lui, tels que James Joyce, Vladimir Nabokov, Julien Green ou Samuel Beckett, Vassilis Alexakis a fait le choix de l'auto-traduction, un exercice qu'il considère comme faisant partie intégrante de son travail d'écriture. Au cours de cette rencontre, il lèvera le voile sur sa pratique de la traduction tout en abordant une question essentielle à ses yeux : « Y a-t-il une vie en dehors du roman ? ».

Conference Littératures en langue française : Histoire, Mythes et Création

Self-translation will be the topic of two talks at the conference Littératures en langue française : Histoire, Mythes et Création, taking place 21-22.11.2013 at Paris, France.

Michel Calapodis will give a talk on Vassilis Alexakis with the title: "D'une prose de la migration à l’incarnation du paradigme historique de l’hellénisme : l’œuvre francophone de Vassilis Alexakis".

Here is an extract of his abstract:
"Auteur à double résidence, bilingue, auto-traduisant ses propres romans, V. Alexakis inscrit tous ses récits dans un va-et-vient de nature identitaire entre la scène française et la scène grecque. [...] D’une certaine manière, sous la « parole » francophone de souvenirs érigés en fiction, transparaît le type d’histoire qui est activé : une histoire-mémoire de la nation hellénique dont la diglossie narrative renforce le caractère ipse (ipséité) de son identité."


Ghenadie Râbacov will give a talk about Linda Maria Baros with the title: "Vues sémiotiques sur la création poétique bilingue et l’autotraduction chez Linda Maria Baros"

"[...] Tout en se basant sur la théorie du sens et les postulats des sémioticiens Ch. Pierce et A. Ljudskanov, le chercheur tâche de démontrer que l’acte autotraductif est de nature sémiotique, que c’est un cas spécifique de l’automatisation des activités créatrices de l’homme, relevant du processus mental qui se projette dans le duo auteur-traducteur. L’auteur présente aussi un modèle d’analyse sémiotique de quelques poésies écrites et autotraduites par le poète roumain L. M. Baros. Il propose sa propre définition de l’autotraduction et insiste sur la notion de double : double activité mentale, double identité linguistique, double original."

Today is Vassilis Alexakis birthday, so all my best wishes to him. Next chance to meet him will be tomorrow in Paris, where he will be one of the participants of a round table on translation and multilingualism.

A journée d'étude on Vassilis Alexakis will take place in Amiens, France on Friday 25 November. Now the program has been published. There will be 5 talks during the day, 2 focusing on self-translation:

Writing in French

Today I would like to present you the book "La langue française vue d'ailleurs" which consists of 100 interviews conducted by Patrice Martin and Christophe Drevet with writers from all over the world who chose to write in French. The book has been published by Tarik Editions in 2001 and is based on the radio emission "La Langue française vue d'ailleurs" (MEDI 1). Each interview is about two to three pages long and focuses on the questions of bilingualism and the choice of their literary language. Each interview is accompanied by a few bio- and bibliographical information on the writer. Amongst the 100 writers are also a few self-translators, namely Vassilis Alexakis, Rachid Boudjedra, Nancy Huston and Anne Weber.

Alexakis: Exorciser l'exil

A shortened version of the dissertation by Marianne Bessy on Vassilis Alexakis will be published by Rodopi next month. On the editor's homepage you can take a look at the content of the book.
It is the first book-length study of Alexakis bilingual work and I can highly recommend reading it.
I presented the dissertation about 2 years ago on another blog post. The free online version of the dissertation to which I refered in my previous post has been removed from the site.

Literary self-translation, exile and dialogism: the multilingual works of Vassilis Alexakis

Eleftheria Tassiopoulos has now published an article on Alexakis based on her lecture presented at the conference “New Research in Translation and Interpreting Studies” held in Tarragona in 2009.
Her article Literary self-translation, exile and dialogism: the multilingual works of Vassilis Alexakis is available online. Referring to Mikhail Bakhtin's theory of dialogism, she discusses two of his works Talgo (fiction) and Les Mots étrangers (autofiction).

Interview with Vassilis Alexakis

Yesterday Vassilis Alexakis talked about his new book "Le premier mot" at France Inter Cosmopolitaine. If you missed it, you will soon have the possibility to listen to the whole broadcasting on the website from France Inter-Cosmopolitaine. Meanwhile you could listen to an interview about his new new book, which he gave to RFI in september last year.

Vassilis Alexakis will present his new book Le premier mot this thursday, 18th November, at the Libraire La boîte à Livres in Tours, France.

New book by Alexakis

"Le premier mot" is the title of the new book by Vassilis Alexakis which will be published in French by Editions Stock in August . I have not found yet any information about a Greek version. But as Alexakis is a regular self-translator, I am expecting to hear about a Greek version soon.
